Women Returning to School
Tip 1: Develop a mind-set to complete your goal.
Before you even get started you need to focus on not only going back to school, but also completing school. Make up your mind that in spite of anything you face you are going to be dedicated to obtain your certificate or degree! Your mind can definitely be a battleground when you are returning to school, it will tell you all of the reasons that this choice won’t work, and this leads to self-sabotage. It can work and you can do it! To many times we focus on the reasons that returning to school can’t be done, instead of the reasons that it can be done. So decide right now to develop a mind-set to succeed as you embark upon your dream of pursuing your education.
Tip 2: Don’t look at the big picture, but take it day by day.
Instead of looking months or years down the road, take it day by day. Take smaller steps toward the dream, and that will lead to the big dream! Focus on one class at a time, one day at a time, and before you know it you will be strutting across the stage in your cap and gown graduating!
Tip 3: Delegate your responsibilities.
Before and during school, make sure that you delegate responsibilities to others in your family. Get a “Help mom make it” list together for your mate and children, and have everyone commit to doing something extra around the help to assist in your success. If you don’t have anyone at home, then maybe you can have a friend or someone else step in and help you do small chores and errands. Even if it is perceived to be something small that you delegate, the less you have to do the better. Many times as women we develop the “Superwoman Syndrome” and we feel like we have to do it all, and that is absolutely not true! If you stop to think about it, we have done so much for others that it is our time to help someone help us. Never think that you are being an inconvenience by asking someone to step in and assist you, because those who love you are excited to help you be the best woman that you can be, and that means supporting your dreams and goals!
Tip 4: Visualize yourself reaching your goal:
Whether you have already returned to school or you are in the process of enrolling. It is imperative to always visualize yourself being successful. Visualize yourself doing well in class, and getting good grades. Visualize yourself completing your program. Visualize seeing your name on that certificate or degree. What you see in your mind, is what you are drawn toward, so always see positive things in your mind and not negative things. This is where the dream board comes in handy. Make a visual board and put a picture of you on it, with a cap and gown on (you can make this on the internet, or using cut outs). Put pictures of the house or car you want to buy after you graduate on it, anything visual related to your goal of completing school should go on your dream board. Write down the reasons that you are going back to school, and the outcomes of your graduating (better job, fulfillment, increase in pay, etc.) Keep a visual list in your purse or wallet and pull it out every day to keep you motivated!
Tip 5: Refuse to Quit!
Returning to school may not be easy, but it is worth it. It is hard trying to raise a family, work, and all of the other things that we do as women, and go to school at the same time. But no matter how difficult it gets don’t quit! Write a contract promising yourself that no matter what comes your way while you are in school you will not give up, sign and date it. Include why you are returning to school, and what your dreams are after you obtain your certificate or degree, also include other things that were challenging in your life, and how you felt once you mastered them. If you just keep pushing through every obstacle you will birth that dream of completing school before you know it!
